Downtown Azteca the Worst in Spokane.
On the weekend of August 21/22, 2010, my wife and I went to Azteca Downtown for the first time and was very disappointed. I've always been happy with the Azteca on Newport Highway so we were expecting the same quality of service and food.
Jesus was our server and he did nothing but make excuses for the poor service, never denying it, but confirming it through his excuses. Waitress/Bartender took our drink order, but didn't return with it correctly. After a while she just didn't bring anything at all. I asked Jesus how long it would take just to get a cup of coffee and he continued making excuses but eventually brought it.
The meal came and it took forever. The restaurant wasn't overly busy so there was no reason for such negligent service.
The food was OK I guess, but we were filled with so much disgust over the service, nothing would have tasted good. I always have at least two margarita's, but this time I only had one....once I finally got it! And much to my disappointment, it tasted like a watery slushy with a slight flavor of sweet and sour mix. (I think the bartender was spending too much time with 'Pedro' in the back)
After getting tired of waiting for the bill, we finally got up and went to the front of the restaurant. Boy, you should have seen how fast Jesus showed up then! We told him how poor the service was and all he could do was make excuses, blaming management for not hiring enough to take care of customers.
From my observation it seems management hired the WRONG people because they were all goofing off leaving all of the work on Jesus. I have to say Jesus did try, but he had absolutely no help which was sorely needed.
The only satisfaction I got from the experience is that I had discouraged two potential customers from dining there. After I talked to them, they decided to go somewhere else.
It was obvious we weren't the only dissatisfied customers. There were a few tables we saw where people left and barely ate any of the food. Didn't even take a doggie bag.
Ok so the food was good, atleast my meal, my dad took me and the family there for my birthday, he ordered a chili reliano, deep fried breded with cheeze and a chilli inside, when he cut into it with his fork a terrible smell filled the area, but he thought thats what they must smell like he took a bite and it was moldy!!, but hes a really nice guy he wanted to be sure that he just wasnt unsatisfied with his meal so he passed it around the table and it was horrible you could literally taste the mold! We called our waiter and told him about it we all testified to it, he replied, but sir nobody else has complained about it, again everyone at the table said its moldy we can all taste it, he went to get the manager or another waiter, he said wever been serving these all day we hand make them and no one else has complained.
well we kept trying but we got nowhere, we werent offered a refund we werent offered another one, just a little mold in the cheese, thats completely understandable but they treated us like we were stupid, i do not reccomend anyone return to this azteca. Even though i love azteca ive never returned to once since after being treated like we were idiots it completely ruined the trip for everyone, that was the only thing we did for my birthday everone else was pissed off enought that we just drove strait home.
If you are from the SW, you may be disappointed. This is a clean, ok priced restaurant. However being that I lived in NM for 15 years it is not that great. I am still looking for authentic Mexican food and after eating at Azteca I am still searching. My husband was born and raised on Mexican food and his comment was he would rather eat at Taco Bell. So the search is still on! Authentic Green and Red Chili has to be somewhere other than NM.
Best Mexican in town (downtown). I have eaten alot of Mexican food and think this is one of the best places in Spokane you can get a Mexican dish. It is an amazing dichotomy though; the downtown location has good service, super food and a wonderfully festive atmosphere. The valley location has terrible service, detestable conditions (my clean water glass still had another woman's lipstick on it when I took a sip once, and I won't even start to talk about the service...) and mediocre food. Eat downtown and avoid the valley location like the plague.
